Artist's Comments

This is a first look at yet another whim I'm lucky enough to have friends willing to help me see to the end.

I don't know if the image works 100% - you'll have to tell me.

I can say that the image is 100% composed in camera and that the Orchid mural is over 9 feet tall.

And that is essential casting to have a real yoga instructor play the part of a Shy Yogi.

Thanks to :iconwynnesome: ^wynnesome yet again.

Critiques

When I saw the thumbnail for this piece, I thought it was a beautifully composed still life drawing. After realizing it was a photo, I stared at it for quite some time trying to figure out how the mural blended seamlessly into the floor, and even moreso how the shadows could fall at such an angle. I haven't been able to figure that out, and as far as I'm concerned, that makes the piece so much more impressive.

The painting of the figure blends perfectly with the style of mural, and leaves me in mind of a wood carving left out in the weather. The orchid is gorgeous, and reminds me of beautiful ikebana. The tilt of the top blossoms to the left draw my eye in a circle down to the figure, and the shadows draw my eye back to the orchid. If the shadows fell in any other way, I don't believe the composition would have such an easy flow.

The piece evokes in me both feelings of hope and despair. The figure seems despondent, yet he sits a very short distance from such a beautiful, vibrant, and tranquil display of nature. Both sit in isolation from reality, in a void of sorts, allowing me, as the viewer, the bring to it my own hopes, dreams, contemplations, and perceptions.

I wish I could think of some advice to give, but there isn't a thing I would change about this piece.

First... Awesome concept and execution! You guys have more creativity in your pinkie than I have in my whole body.

To me something looks slightly out of kilter with this shot and I think i know what it is... The shadow for both the shy yogi and the mural fall to the left. So the highlight on the right shoulder (camera left) looks odd (there is no logical light source for that highlight). In fact I don't know how you snooted or gridded the light tight enough to get that highlight without casting a shadow to shy yogi's left (camera right).

Thanks for the kind words... and the valuable critique.

Yep. Lighting fun.... this was originally going to be shot outdoors so we would have absolute space an no lighting restrictions.
The weather, she did not cooperate. Pouring rain moved the shoot indoors.

I also added some airbrush highlights to add emphasis to some parts. This improved the yogi, but added accuracy complications.

It was absolutely a delicate dance of getting the Yogi to look good, while at the same time keeping the entire image looking right.

The orchid still looks a little "float-y" to me - because the shadow I painted on set just is not as convincing as the real ones on the yogi.

Lots and lots of things learned.

Actually the orchid shadow looks convincing enough to me because that shadows would be a little lighter and less defined if the light is coming from that direction.

Honestly, you guys BLOW ME AWAY with how "right" you can get something fabricated from your minds and with some paint and light! I hope the critique is taken in the spirit of everyone always stiving to get better.
